Gratitude and self compassion

I wrote recently about self-compassion; It’s a good habit to form. It means being kind to ourselves as we would to someone else; being our own best friend.
It’s good to make time for ourselves; to give ourselves little gifts.
I find that getting outdoors, even for just a few minutes is a way to connect with something that is so much bigger than ourselves. We awaken our souls; We recognise the spiritual.
Last Mothers’ Day, my daughter bought me a beautiful rose that I had once seen in a royal garden. I never dreamt that I could ever have it in mine. I planted it with great affection. I watered it. I fed it when the very first buds began to form and today, I went out at first light to see if any buds had developed. Two hours later, I checked again. Call me obsessive but that connection with something outside of me is so thrilling. Even when I saw the elderflowers begin to form on trees in the country lanes, my heart sang for joy. There’s something about expressing gratitude that makes connection. We all need to feel we belong. It dispels loneliness, even for a few moments and keeps depression at bay.
Give yourself a little gift today and note the difference that it makes. Then keep doing it till it becomes a daily habit.
