Be kind to your self
So, as well as being kind to others, we need to be kind to ourselves. Why is that important? Isn’t that a bit of a ‘me-first’ attitude? Surely nice people put others before themselves?
Many of us are self-critical. We tell ourselves off for our shortcomings; as though everyone is 100% perfect at everything they do.
This mind-set becomes a launching pad for unfiltered negativity. ‘I forgot to answer that email yesterday, Now, that’s caused a problem and what if I get sacked ? Look at my eye bags and I’m so dishevelled compared to everyone else’.
So how do we peel off this self-criticism? The easy answer is to become your own compassionate best friend. That means that you make your self-talk the same as if talking to a close friend.
When you have a small victory such as the children are happily settled in bed before midnight, congratulate yourself and celebrate with a treat.
Maybe a nice foot soak in those salts you got for Mothers’ Day.
Or go all out and light some candles and have a hot bath.
You could read a book, write a letter, phone a friend while having your favourite tea in your best mug. It needn’t be expensive treat. The important part is that it’s time for you; your own best friend who’s not 100% perfect but neither is anyone else!
I challenge you to change your self-talk and to celebrate those small victories.
